Is the information on this page official?
No. Everything here is community-reported — drawn from fan wikis, dedicated guide sites, hands-on previews, and the in-game journal as relayed by players. It is not officially confirmed unless a developer post is specifically cited, and because much of it is pre-release, exact numbers and details can change.
Does Valor Mortis have lock-on, and can I rebind controls?
Community-reported: yes to both. There is a 'Target Lock On/Off' toggle plus a Switch Target control, and full rebinding — every action takes a primary and a secondary key with a Reset to Defaults option. The demo exposes the action names (Attack, Slash, Charged Attack, Block, Dodge, Aim, Cast, Reload, Heal, Switch Weapon, Weapon Wheel, and more), though the exact default keys aren't published, so check in-game.
What controller schemes are available?
Community-reported: five presets beyond custom remapping — Default, Classic (a more traditional Souls-style layout), Dodge/Block Swap, Bumper Jumper, and Bumper Jumper 2. Controller icons can be themed for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo, including DualSense and Joy-Con / Pro Controller.
How do I make the demo easier if there's no difficulty slider?
Community-reported: there is no easy mode, but four settings flatten the curve — Target Lock (keeps the camera on the boss), Combat Assist (snaps your swings toward the enemy), Instant Restart (skips the death screen on boss runbacks), and Quick Cast (fires Transmutations without a confirm step). Players recommend turning these on before a boss fight.
What are the four things that actually win fights?
Community-reported: (1) Parry to break Posture and land a Critical Attack instead of trading hits; (2) extract Nephtoglobin with melee hits and shattered Weak Points, then spend it on a Fire, Stasis, or Shield Transmutation at the right moment; (3) level Maximum Health and Melee Damage first; and (4) pick a survival Amber — life-steal and regeneration variants turn a brutal fight into a survivable one.
Who are the demo bosses, and how do I beat them?
Community-reported: the demo has two named bosses. General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer is a two-phase, relentless commander who fights alongside the spawn of his rage — manage the adds, keep Target Lock on the General, and use Stasis to buy space when swarmed. High Justicar Aurelius, Last of the Faithful is a master fencer and the demo's parry check — bait his strings, parry to break Posture, and punish with Criticals. Patience over aggression.
How do I counter the field threats between me and the bosses?
Community-reported counters (drawn from William's in-game journal): Carrion is immune to blades — burn the mass holding it together with Fire Transmutation; Eternal Guardsman is an elite fencer — parry its strikes and break its Posture; Howler hunts in packs — use openings or Stasis to thin the group; Risen Grenadier lobs grenades — close the gap while dodging throws; Risen Musketeer — its slow reload is your window; Risen Sapeur — dodge its barricade-breaking blows rather than blocking; Volunteer Brute — duck its wide greatsword swings and strike the gaps; Risen Soldier — parry basics and counter; Shambling Villagers are weak alone but can pile on.
What should I do first if the demo crashes or won't load?
Community-reported 'fastest safe order': install the latest Steam update, update your GPU driver, restart the game, and avoid FSR on an affected Nvidia GPU (use TSR or DLSS instead). If loading still fails, verify the game is using the discrete GPU. Change one setting at a time and record the upscaler, Frame Generation, HDR, preset, and display mode that triggered the problem. Note that version 1.02 requires a game restart after enabling Frame Generation due to an Unreal Engine limitation.
I'm getting a D3D12 error or the wrong GPU is being used — what's the fix?
Community-reported official workaround: make sure the game runs on the main/discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics. Nvidia users can set this in the Nvidia Control Panel. The developer also suggests disabling Intel(R) AI Boost through Device Manager — but since disabling a device affects your whole system, try explicit high-performance GPU selection first. For an AMD crash mentioning amdxc64.dll, the reported workaround is a clean driver reinstall, as that file may be missing or corrupted.
Is the DLSS loading freeze fixed?
Unclear — and community-reported as still contested. The developer's June 11 pinned list still warns that enabling DLSS may freeze loading, while the June 10 version 1.02 post says 'DLSS is Back' and makes DLSS 4.5 available. Because of this conflict, players do not label the freeze universally fixed. If DLSS freezes on your system, switch to TSR, restart, and report it rather than force-closing repeated loads with the same setting.
How does progression work — Lanterns, Catalyst, and Amber?
Community-reported: Lanterns are checkpoints that become restart points when lit and let you spend Catalyst; resting or dying resets regular enemies. Bank Catalyst before dangerous paths. Ambers are survival items with life-steal and regeneration variants. Upgrades are spent through a stat tree, and players recommend Maximum Health and Melee Damage first.
What weapons, traversal, and powers are available in the demo?
Community-reported: melee and ranged weapons include the Rapier (Lighthouse level), Pistol, Musket (debuting at the Lighthouse), Sabre (secured at the start of Chapter I: Revival), and the Greatsword. Traversal uses a Grapple Hook and Wall-Running. Supernatural Transmutations include Fire (removes organic barriers, burns Carrion), Stasis (buys space, thins packs), and Shield (Lighthouse level, no further detail published). Channeling power correctly strengthens attacks and unlocks new skills.
Can I save at any time?
Community-reported: yes — the demo includes a 'Save Anytime' comfort feature that lets players save at any time and resume freely.
