What This Valor Mortis Demo Walkthrough Covers
The Valor Mortis demo is not a single continuous slice of the campaign — it ships as two separate modified chapters, each testing a different side of the game:
- Chapter I: Revival — a mostly linear battlefield tutorial that ends with a boss fight against General Lothaire.
- Chapter VII: Witch Hunt — a later-game slice built around the rapier, musket, Shield Transmutation, grappling, wall-running, and swinging.
Treat each chapter as a standalone test rather than expecting normal chapter-to-chapter story flow. This route is deliberately milestone-based: it guides you through what to do and when, without inventing exact pickup coordinates. Note that the demo build described here is community-reported and may differ from the earlier 2025 pre-alpha build, so details can shift between patches.

Before You Start
A few setup steps will save you a lot of frustration in the demo’s opening hour.
Update the demo and your GPU driver first. Official patches 1.01–1.03 addressed multiple crashes, progression blockers, GPU detection issues, and performance problems. If you have not updated, progression blockers in particular can stop your run cold.
Nvidia users: do not start with FSR. The developer’s pinned issue thread recommends using TSR or DLSS while they investigate FSR-related GPU crashes. Starting on FSR risks a hard crash during the tutorial stretch.
Read the tutorial panels the first time they appear. Chapter I front-loads light and charged attacks, stamina, parries, dodges, finishers, ranged fire, transmutation, Lantern checkpoints, and leveling into a short stretch of gameplay. Skipping the panels means missing the vocabulary the rest of the demo assumes you already know.
Spend your Catalyst before a risky push. Lanterns act as rest and upgrade points. Because resting or dying resets regular enemies, it is better to convert Catalyst into upgrades at a Lantern before you push into a new fight than to hoard it and lose momentum.
Chapter I: Revival Walkthrough
1. Secure the Sabre and Learn the Stamina Rhythm
You wake on the battlefield with the opening path ahead of you. Secure the sabre, then use the first enemies exactly as the tutorial intends: learn how much stamina a short attack string leaves you for a dodge.
The key lesson here is stamina discipline. Avoid emptying the bar simply because an enemy is staggered — a stagger tempts you to keep swinging, but running out of stamina leaves nothing for the dodge that follows. Get comfortable with short strings and readable recovery windows before tougher enemies appear.
2. Practice the Parry on Single Soldiers
A successful defensive rhythm is more valuable than rushing through the early fights. Focus on one basic attacker at a time: let them commit to a swing, parry the readable attack, and take the finisher when the game presents it.
This is not optional style — it is direct preparation for the Chapter I boss. Soldiers teach the timing cadence you will need against General Lothaire, so invest the time on them while the stakes are low.

3. Take the Pistol and Use Environmental Weak Points
The pistol serves double duty as both a combat tool and a route tool. Watch for orange growths — these can mark shootable weak points. Developer-backed previews show the pistol being used to drop a tree and open the path forward, so treat ranged fire as a way to manipulate the environment, not just a damage option.
4. Light Every Lantern You Pass
A lit Lantern becomes your restart point, and resting there doubles as your upgrade station. Encounter the checklist this way:
- Light each Lantern as you find it so a death does not send you far back.
- Rest at a Lantern to spend Catalyst and upgrade before a boss or a new combat arena.
- Remember that resting or dying resets regular enemies — plan your pushes with that respawn in mind.

5. Push to General Lothaire
With your stamina discipline, parry timing, pistol route tools, and a lit Lantern behind you, the run to General Lothaire is the chapter’s endpoint. Because Chapter I is mostly linear, your main preparation is mechanical: arrive with upgrades spent, a Lantern lit nearby, and parry timing already practiced on the soldiers along the way.
Chapter VII: Witch Hunt Walkthrough
The second slice drops you into a later-game toolkit, so expect to be working with systems Chapter I never introduced:
- Rapier and musket — a faster, more ranged-centric loadout than the Chapter I sabre and pistol.
- Shield Transmutation — transmutation returns in a defensive, shield-oriented form.
- Grappling, wall-running, and swinging — traversal tools that shift the chapter toward mobility and route-finding.
Because this is a deliberately advanced slice, the community-facing framing is to treat it as a taste of late-game movement and combat rather than a continuation of the Chapter I tutorial. Expect the difficulty curve and toolset to feel like a jump — that is intentional.
Release Date, Availability, and Save Data
These points are community-reported and not officially confirmed, so verify against the live store before you commit time to downloading.
- Demo chapters: Two modified slices — Chapter I: Revival and Chapter VII: Witch Hunt.
- Length: No representative playtime is published. Speedrun times are not a normal first-play estimate.
- Save transfer: No campaign save-transfer promise appears in the official demo sources used here. Treat the demo as a standalone test build.
- Release/availability window: The announced July 20–August 7, 2026 event window has ended. Steam still displayed a Download Valor Mortis Demo button at August 11, 2026 at 04:00 UTC — installation and launch were not independently tested, and store availability can change at any time.

Platform Notes (Including PS5)
Availability for the demo was reported via Steam, and console storefront details are not confirmed in the community sources used here. If you are looking for a Valor Mortis PS5 version of the demo, treat any such listing as unverified until you see it on the live storefront yourself — the download button observed on Steam is a PC store signal, not a platform-wide confirmation.
Quick Tips Recap
- Patch to 1.01–1.03 and update your GPU driver before launching.
- On Nvidia, stay on TSR or DLSS and avoid FSR while the crash investigation is open.
- Learn stamina discipline in Chapter I instead of button-mashing staggered enemies.
- Practice parries on single soldiers — it is boss prep, not optional style.
- Use the pistol on orange growths to open routes.
- Light every Lantern and spend Catalyst before risky pushes.
- Approach Chapter VII as an advanced gameplay slice, not a story continuation.
